To help schools understand the risks and issues around Ransomware we have pulled together a couple of useful resources that you might find helpful.
The first is a useful document has been produced by all the organisations who form the National Education Network, which includes us at ICT4C, on this aspect of online security and this can be downloaded from here.
Our security partners at Sophos have also produced a couple of really useful videos on Ransomware. The first is a general introduction to Ransomware and second is specifically around WannaCry which infected the NHS and other organisations last weekend. It helps to explain how it worked and what you can do about it.
Although Sophos can provide a high level of protection, It is better to avoid downloading malware in the first place and to do this we need to provide staff with training on the issue as so may of these infections start with a social engineering or ‘phishing’ attack over email. By educating our staff we can reduce even further the chances of becoming infected as they become our front line defence through the ability to recognise the warning signs of such attacks.
